Slow September: Navigating Periods of Change with Young Children

Traditionally, September is a month of change, whether it is transitioning to a new classroom, moving on to kindergarten, or just shifting from the lazy days of summer to a more structured school year. Change is hard for children (and for many adults!) and it may take practice to feel comfortable. New people and places can feel scary, and it takes time to form new routines and habits.

For young children and their families, recognizing and honoring the changes that September brings can make those transitions easier. By approaching periods of change with intentionality and purpose, your family will be able to navigate them more smoothly.

Tips on Navigating Periods of Change with Young Children

  • By knowing that this month may bring big emotions, we’re more prepared to remain calm.  When we have the expectation and acceptance of the behaviors change brings, we can be prepared when they pop up. This helps us support our children’s regulation instead of fighting the moment.
  • During periods of change, maintaining usual routines becomes even more important. The consistency of wake up, bedtime, meals, and other daily routines helps to offset the stress and confusion about the more significant changes that are happening.
  • Connection, connection, and more connection! Stay connected with children through playful moments together, greeting and goodbye rituals, and extra hugs. This will help children stay regulated and reduce stress – for all of us!
  • Acknowledge your children’s feelings: “New things feel scary. After you do them for a while, you get used to them.” Talk about other times they have tried something new. Was there another time that something felt scary at first, and then it became enjoyable? Help your child remember how that felt.

At Kinderberry Hill, we encourage each child in our care to grow at their own pace. This is especially true during periods of transition. Teachers and children create a strong connection that allows children to feel safe and supported as they navigate new classrooms, new siblings, or any other significant change in their world.
