At first glance, the children in Kinderberry Hill outdoor classrooms may look like they’re playing outside as usual. However, what is actually happening is rich child-centered learning, exploration, and discovery!
Kinderberry Hill outdoor classrooms are certified by the Nature Explore Program, a national initiative to help children use the natural world as an integral part of learning. These interactive spaces provide a variety of experiences that encourage children to initiate their own activities and test their own ideas in an ever-changing environment.
The Benefits of Outdoor Learning for Young Children
Often, we think of nature as forests, wildlife, and lakes. But nature also includes things as simple as sunshine, leaves, and ladybugs. These small aspects of nature can be absolutely fascinating to young children! Simply being outside brings many new questions for them to pursue. Children work together to test hypotheses and solve problems.
Freedom of movement is a huge outdoor benefit for growing bodies. Pulling wagons, pushing wheelbarrows, and playing chase are all examples of full body play. This play helps children read social cues, lengthen attention spans, and build confidence – not to mention, develop strong and healthy bodies!
Each year, the Kinderberry Hill outdoor classrooms become more enriched. They reflect the interests and adventures of the children using them. We cannot wait to enjoy more sunny days this summer and look forward to discovering yet another beautiful season outside.
